Rudy Black is code for my best pal when I worked at Cable Oakland. I was living with him and his girlfriend shortly after I lost my job there in 1990. My songwriting friend, Chuck Brodsky, had asked me to leave the Bay Area with him to pursue music more music friendly parts of the country. I thought about it and figured I would not know what to do with myself living on the road. Also, I had little faith in myself as a man on the road. I had so little faith it would work I wrote this song about it not working and how embarrassed it is to say goodbye to everyone only to return the very next day.
