Classified Ad I found her number in a classified ad A fast food hairdresser who didn't look too bad Grew up on the soaps and the game show hosts A T.V. degree that accented her most I made my selection and called her on the phone When I asked her direction she stared at her T.V. Screen and said, "What do you mean?" We went to a party that her girl friend had I got to meet the names from the classified ad We analyzed the movies and all got into signs Baby tell me yours and maybe I'll tell mine My analyst said I should get out more than once a week Did you see the diet in the new star It said if you loose all those pounds You'll be the thinnest one around Chorus Sorry friends but I got to get on home I hate to be a bother but I'd rather be alone The wind was howling I walked quickly down the street The night was closing in, the air was loosing heat I felt so empty for again I was alone I thought about returning With that thought I ran on home But on the way I could hear them calling my name Don't you run away we all want you to stay Do the things we do and you'll eliminate your pain Chorus

Step on up, step on in, close the door close  your eyes And search within Everything, everyone, every bit and piece of time's Enclosed Live it now one never knows Chorus All your life long dreams can come alive Everything you want's enclosed inside The dream machine Mary Johnson From Wisconsin Dreamed she'd be a model in a magazine So to Hollywood she flew Did a layout and when it came out She realized she couldn't recognize herself at all They changed her face they dyed her hair Now she don't even care any more Chorus Henry Mizer Truck driver Dreamed he'd be a country singer on a silver stage Singing down home country songs With fame and fortune he could do no wrong Promoters dined him Then they signed him Then they told him all about how it was to be They changed his songs they changed his style 'till he found himself trucking back the miles Chorus When you're ready to come out we take your money And put you in your place

Bartholomew Roberts Words and Music by David Shepherd Grossman 1982 I found him lying on a broken dock In a drunken sleep about four o' clock in the morning One leg good, the other one wood His  eye patched over just like it should I woke him. I said, "Excuse me sir but might you be Of Bartholomew Robert's piracy?" He asked what it was to me. I told him. "I sir am an average Joe A songsmith traveling to and fro I'd like to talk to you before I go" He said, "Me belly could use a bit of rum  you know." I gave him the bottle and he turned to speak His face was old his voice was weak He claimed to be the last of the crew's defeat By a British Man Of War off Cape Lopez (Chorus) Roberts was a gentleman Drank his tea from an old tin can Never touched a bottle kept a clean ship and You'd never guess he was a pirate He said, "Our ship was mighty as a sloop could be Over four hundred vessels plundered we With our sacks full of biscuits we'd return to the sea Our jolly roger blowing proud and free After Roberts robbed a vessel of it's prize He'd return the ship to it's captain's sorry eyes Never questioned any man's disguise He followed the Sabbath as he followed the sky (Chorus) I remember the day clear in me mind We were scrubbing the hull for the very last time When a British Man Of War attacked from behind We were too drunk to fight we were to drunk to mind I by chance swam under a pier and escaped my fate Through luck and fear. Though Robert's wasn't drunk he was just too near The thought of his death fill me eye with tear." (Chorus) I left the docks and headed on. Put the pirates words into A song. Roberts may be dead but his story’s not gone It's hard to believe he was a pirate

When Everything Was New I recall my younger days when everything was new We'd take the horse and buggy home The air was clear the sky was blue Time it passed much slower Than it seems to pass today Now it seems that time just slips away When I was young I'd rise at dawn And wake up brother Bill We'd eat our eggs, toast, and jam And head out for the field I would get the horses Bill prepared the plow What a shame our field's a freeway now Cars and steel machines Do people still have time to dream Oh I recall those skies of blue When I was young and everything was new Love was oh so simple then We knew our lines quite well You'd take a damsel dancing with distant hopes Of wedding bells You'd take her hand, you'd take her home, You'd take a kiss or try Today you take it all and say goodbye I guess I've become out of date This model's just too old My comrades are all passing on It's hard to fit this modern mold Maybe I just can't fit The size I just outgrew But I recall my yesterdays The sky was blue no yellow haze Yes I recall when everything was new

We got lions, tigers, goats, and things We got a camel and a wild boar We got a popcorn , soda, and ice cream stand Take the kids to the animal poster store You can laugh at the chimps and orangutans Take a picture with the ape of the day If all these folks are having such fun Why am I feeling this way Chorus I got the zoo blues On the other side of the cage I got those zoo blues Working for the minimum wage I think some of those monkeys are starting to see That it might be fun to throw some bars around me I got the zoo bee doo bee doo bee doo blues Somebody get me the key We got the penguins in the penguin pool Got the pigs rolling in the slop The alligator saying , "It's cold around here" While the polar bear is saying, "It's hot" And the platypus, in self analysis Trying to figure out what the hell he is I'm here grabbing garbage from the ground Putting it under the lid (Chorus) The zoo keeper is a nice old man, nice but getting slow Pretty soon he's gonna die and if I get the key I'm gonna let them all go Elephants and hippos dancing free in the streets There's no way we could fail 'cause the worst thing could happen Be the cops coming 'round And throwing them back in jail (Chorus)

Shot At The World Rainbows of shadows all tossing and turning Minds disappear with the night Waterfalls crashing and dew drops are burning Crystallized lakes filled with light The queen in her castle the king on his thrown The fool touched the wizard who turned him to stone And here I sit always alone in my mind Chorus I'd like to take a shot at the world Just open my eyes and fly Take a shot to remind myself That this is where I'm alive The boy ran away to be a clown To ride in the circus on the their merry-go-round So he followed the laughter from town to town Just to get thrown in the well The mountains they opened and started to shake The waves crashed down on the tropical lake The fool had been kissed by a princess for sake They were blown away by the wind Chorus
7.
Heart In The Wind Flowers in the garden And a will to keep them there They almost died too many times I became too cold to care But there's a light now through the window It warms the room within A heart back in the wind So many dreams get shattered Mine are just the same Within the loss there's a solitude A comfort in the rain I don't know where I'm going But I feel the way I've been A heart back in the wind A tired sun sets down I watch the sky a while The colors change then start to fade Like sadness in a smile But all the shades feel peaceful As sleep comes creeping in A heart back A heart back A heart back in the wind

Looking Down I'm looking down over the city lights Seems I'm always out on the peaks in these lonely nights The air is cool and crisp Like the break of day I can see a mist Creeping in on the bay And I've been looking around with my head held high Trying to see all the ghosts trying to touch the sky Looking down As seasons turn through time lives do change Some slip into rhyme and some out of range And I was well out of sight 'till the turn of the tide Cut through the ice so I could see outside And I've never quite known what is real from a dream But when I'm out on the peaks I feel right in between Looking Down Fishing boats slowly turning their sails to the wind In the streets the people scurry Running circles in a hurry Don't take time too fast The less you use the more it will last I can see a light rising over the bay Through every dark night there comes a new day The air is crisp it's the break of dawn I'm driving down through the mist to the city beyond And I've been doing some thinking On this high level ground And when that sun starts to set I'll be back looking down Looking down

The Marionette Tonight for a moment I stepped out of character Broke the strings and walked off the floor I stopped to play with the marionette Pulled one string and he turned one way Made him react and made him obey I was the life in the marionette I looked up at the stars and  wondered why Why we must live and why we must die The life it left the marionette So there it lies What is the use You don't know what's in between the questions And the truth I picked up the strings and tied them back on Sat down to write the words to this song And turned back into the marionette So what I have learned I also have lost You can't obtain happiness 'till you've been through the cost That will kill the marionette Tonight for a moment I stepped out of character Broke the strings and walked off the floor

Broken Heart Harbor I used to  be a sailor The storms washed me a shore In this pub here on the corner With the gypsies and the whores Sweet Misty was my love But love was struck by time For when I did return One less love was mine Chorus I've anchored here in broken heart harbor An uncharted island where broken hearts stay I drifted in here when my Misty was taken Drifted in here when my Misty was taken Drifted in here when my Misty was taken away The streets can seem so empty Deserts seem so dry I hope one day to glimpse beyond The curtains of the sky Everyday I walk an edge In case a boat floats by With a message in a bottle To tell me you're alive Chorus

Johnny Chrome Engine On birthday number five my daddy died He was fixing a flat by that mountain road side Cranked up the jack slipped under the car When the jack came down poor old daddy saw stars The last words we exchanged was by that highway exit I said, "Daddy it's falling," he said, "Holly shit." Now I'm older and a genius it seems I got the coolest set of wheels you have ever seen Got a chrome transmission and neon plugs Got silk upholstery and a Chinese rug If you lift the hood you won't believe your eyes It's like the sunset strip under moonlit skies Chorus They call me Johnny Chroooooome Johnny Chrome Engine I'm as proud as can be The American ace from sea to sea I built me that car and I call it the Phantom When you slip it in gear it plays the national anthem Me and my car having so much fun I'd cruise it on the strip if it would only run Every Saturday night I push it down the block All the kids in town think it's really hot Chorus Someday I'm gonna get me a car to cruise Gonna throw in the can these old walking shoes Gonna drive to school Gonna drive all around Gonna tow the Phantom all through the town Then all the guys will think I'm really hip See Johnny Chrome Engine on the Sunset Strip

Outlaw Hobo In 1901 I got my first gun I knew how to shoot and I knew when to run We were waiting on a stagecoach the day I was told The old stagecoach line became the southern railroad Now I sit on this street corner Night after night On a bench underneath this old traffic light My draw's a bit rusty and I run kind of slow But I still have the charm of an outlaw hobo I robbed the stagecoach and a train in my time Wanted from Kansas to the Texas state line I was never a legend or much of a name I'm not Billy The Kid and I ain't Jesse James Outlaws these days they don't have much style They hold up machines and plea insane on trial My spirit's bone dry, but that's how it goes When you live the life of an outlaw hobo Life feels empty most of the time I fill it with whiskey and bottles of wine The sound of a train still takes me back in my mind Hold-ups, gambling, and drinking all day I'm too old for the first two but the last one's okay In the north part of Texas - buried out there I hid five thousand dollars but can't recall where Moments and memories that much I've got And I remember it well whether it happened or not 'cause I can't determine the difference no more I'm just an old outlaw hobo and not sure what for

Bridge Of Wood & Stone With both hands in my pockets I walked the mountain trail A soft spring breeze scattered leaves From tree tops down they sailed There were no city sounds no people around And I walked down to a stream Built a little bridge and slipped into a dream I thought of home But all I've known Chorus Seems so far away Taxi cabs and busses rushing in and out all day Nights out on the town Kicking cans along the ground I built this bridge of wood and stone Do we cross our lives alone? Behind the tree topped mountains There's a clear and cloudless sky Circling so patiently a hawk swiftly glides Everyone I know had asked me not to go But I don't know what they mean The answer is there isn't one what truth lies in between I took a step across and suddenly felt lost Chorus Where is home? I looked into the stream to see And saw my reflection staring back at me

about

This was my first official release. It was out in 1984 on cassette tape. . Some say this is some of the best of my songwriting. I've never been sure of that so I keep trying... I think of it as the high school years. These songs were recorded between the ages of 14 and 18.

Classified Ad: Before, I had a shop teacher, electronics, who used to meet these anonymous women he found in the classified section at the gig I had at The Wine Cellar in Ghiradelli Square in SF. In 10th grade I and was all about music. I didn't date at all in highschool. I saw him looking for love in all the wrong places. He inspired me to write this song. 1982

The Dream Machine: There was quite a bit of talk in the early 1980s about record companies molding artists. This was also around the time Neil Young was getting sued by David Geffen for not sounding enough like himself! I wrote this after hearing about that. 1984

Bartholomew Roberts: This song was crafted after listening to Stan Rogers and his amazing maritime songs. Neil J Young, who produced this song, sent it to Stan Rogers before Stan's death in 1983. Stan wrote back to Neil that the song sounded a lot like his early songs. Maybe too much like his early songs.

When Everything Was New: A song I wrote for my Grandfather on my step mother's side.... Lou Tisdale. Skep Henderson heard this song and thought George Burns would be a good guy to sing it. He took me to Lake Tahoe where George Burns was performing. He bought us both tickets to see the show. Then Skip found his way backstage somehow and got a tape of When Everything Was New to George Burns through his manager. I got a letter back from his "people" saying poor George wasn't allowed to listen to "unsolicited" material. I sent a letter back saying a person as well known as George Burns should be able to listen to anything he wants - he was God in the movie Oh God! I got another letter back saying they were sorry I didn't understand. 1982

Zoo Blues: Written when my high school friend got a job working the carousel at The San Francisco Zoo for the summer. Andrew Dulaney later would fund a project called The Songwriter's Workshop i came up with that was an artistic success. That means it made no money. Andrew passed away too young and in a bad mental space. I talked to him about 6 months before he died and he just sounded so sad. I wished I could have helped. 1982

Shot At The World: I wrote parts of this song in a song I called Tropical. It was written in 1977. I there is a recording of my 10 year old squeaky voice singing it to a hand barely able to get around the neck of a guitar. In 1981 I was in SF on a Muni bus and I wrote the lyrics. It was a foggy day and I was depressed. I came home and put a little guitar riff to the thing. Recorded it in 1982 and now that recording is in a movie called Boris And The Bomb that screened in March of 2019. Written in 1981

Heart In The Wind: Stan Rogers died in 1983. I wrote this song for him and Neil sent it to Stan's mother after his death. Valerie Rogers wrote back saying how much it moved her. Mission accomplished. 1983

Looking Down: I used to go with my older high school friends to Twin Peaks and play guitar in the back seat of my pal Len's car while we all got stoned and simply looked down at the city. That's all there is to it.

The Marionette: I wrote it and threw it out. Who was going to understand this from a 15 year old? Before taking the trash out I dug into the can and recovered the poem and decided to write the song anyway. It became a song requested all the time at The Wine Cellar.
I have no idea what people are going to get or not get. That's been one of my shortcomings in life. 1981

Broken Heart Harbour: Written in Arizona. With so many people into Bartholomew Roberts, my music friends wanted to learn it and play it at their own gigs, why not write another sea chanty? This song was covered by the band Amicus when they were together. It was thrilling for me to hear them do a 7 minute epic version of the song with flute solos. Who does that anymore? 1982

Always That Way: Just a song about being a teenager. 1983

Johnny Chrome Engine: Wrote it in Auto Shop Class. The shop teacher, Mr. Zinky, knew I was a performing songwriter and gave me a choice, I could write a song and perform it for the class or take the final exam. I wrote the song and got a B. Great! Until my car broke down and I tried singing the song but it still wouldn't run. Go figure. 1983

Outlaw Hobo: Maybe a self prediction? Time will tell. 1984

Bridge Of Wood And Stone. I went to Forest Farm Camp in Forest Knolls Ca. There was a trail that lead to a stream with a little bridge over the stream just off the camp grounds. I wasn't supposed to go there but I went there almost everyday alone to ponder on that bridge. That is where this song came from. 1984

released July 21, 2014

There are so many people who helped me make this album. I am sure to forget someone. Neil Jay Young recorded and produced all the songs. Grant Baldwin was an executive producer. David Klotz played piano. Merrick Lipton played violin. Mal Cusenberry played bass. Mark Garay played drums. Skip Henderson played concertina. The great Canadian guitar player David Rea appears on Outlaw Hobo. David performed with Gordon Lightfoot and many other established artists. Glen Frendel programed the Lindrum on the first track and helped engineer. Bill Thompson also engineered.
